Sisters - From my last zoo walk

I see your point. I like them both but I'm not sure which I like better. Either way I still think it's a great shot.

Thanks SCraig - lol.. yup, I have the same dilemma myself. I finally settled on the one that was closer cropped myself, but it wasn't exactly an easy decision. Well, on the upside I still have my day job.. lol.

I love the sweet expressions, I prefer number one for sure.

I'm going to add a vote for the OP . The reason for that thought ...........The block wall in the BG . It takes away the illusion of the shot being in the wilds .The idea of them being in a zoo diminishes it for me . I realize the wall was in the OP ,but not as prevalent . Just my 2 cents .

Can't disagree with you there - I also prefer the ones that don't have a background that just scream "ZOO". I'm still fairly mediocre with photoshop, don't really have the skills to fix/edit that much of a photo. The 70-300 mm lens I have is limited to a max of F/4.5 on the low end so only so much you can do for background separation sometimes. I'm putting some money aside though and hoping to get a 70-200 mm F/2.8 which might be helpful in situations like this one. But no complaints really, all in all it was a great day. Had a lot of fun, met several interesting people and my doctor is out of my hair now that I'm out walking as much as I am since taking photography back up again.

Nice shots! I think sometimes zoo shots can be tougher then in the wild. So many obstacles, like chain link fences, walls or someone's big head. You do the best you can for the shot and that's all we can do.#1 has my vote as well.

Side note ,I think you should share 1067 from you're flickr. Please forgive my boldness ,but to me it is a strong image that deservers more exposure .

Lol.. well they both present some unique challenges that is for sure. With the shots in the wild there's generally a lot more wandering around to find the critters, and then of course getting close enough to them to get a decent shot - but you don't generally have to contend with a boat load of tourists who don't seem to understand the concept that what you wanted was a picture of the lion, not a picture of the back of their head. For some reason they just never seem to realize that you can't shoot through them.

But on the flip side you've got all those great signs that say things like "Zebra" or "Giraffe" with a nice handy little arrow letting you know where they are, you go there and bam, there they are.. lol. Plus the concession stands are a nice bonus. I'm pretty fortunate myself, I live in an area where we have one of the best zoo's around - The Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha, plus a wildlife safari park, and then I also have three state parks all within 10 minutes of the house. As a result I usually have a lot of options to choose from, in the winter months though I tend to stay with the Zoo more often than not. Nice part is I can wander around till I get too cold, then head inside the Desert Dome or the Lied Jungle and warm up while still getting to take pictures, then back outside again - makes for a fairly low stress, productive day.

Very nice, it look a flat have you tried increasing the saturation a bit, or is it my monitor?

John.

Nice shot, have you tried maybe a little vignetting to bring the viewers eye to the centre of the image :)

It's an older shot but I think I can probably dig up the original RAW and give it a try, just see if I can come up with something I like better than the original. Thanks for the suggestion Wickie :)

I like the original crop. Really great shot!!

I actually prefer the first shot, as the eyes are clearly visible unlike in the second one. Maybe you should try to fix the original pic by overlapping one over the other in photoshop.. It's worth a try. Great shots anyway robbins :)
