This is my first attempt at...HDR? Tone mapping? I don't know what to call it. Anyway, let me know what I can improve on??

It's nicely composed, and the exposure is controlled pretty well. Other than the sun and clouds next to it, there are no blown highlights. BUT, for me, the intense flare really ruins the image. Either try and photoshop it out, or make sure you are using lens hoods or shading the lens in some way.

I keep going back and forth about the flare. I'll try to get rid of it and see if I like it.

I'm trying to get rid of it but it just makes the picture look weird. Any tips for getting rid of it? I've only tried cloning it out so far...I'm not sure what else I can do.

A lens hood is not going to help in that situation, as you're pointed right at the sun.

This much be one of the strongest/strangest sun flares that I've ever seen. It looks like someone took a couple felt markers and drew a couple small lines, then smudged them down the photo.

As for getting rid if it. You could create a selection of the areas with the flare, then try to remove or subdue the colors that are in the flare but not in the image behind it. Then try to clone/heal it out. The first step isn't really necessary, but it might make the second step easier.

Oh, like the Tokina 11-16 that you have?? The exact same lens I took the picture with...

Okay no flare. I did the best I could. It seems so noticeable where it was, it's hard to say if that's from me staring at it though. Anyway, let me know your thoughts

I think too much detail is lost in the shadows for an HDR. You needed another photo exposed a stop to a stop and a half more than you had. That's unless you got exactly what you wanted.

I did the auto 3 stop setting in my camera (I don't remember what it's called). I think it was set for 2 stops either direction. I'll look when I can get back to my computer. Are you talking about the hillside that extends from the left being too dark or just overall?

If you notice the flare when you take the picture, often times a small adjustment to the direction you are shooting will get rid of it.
