Small Rainbow Cloud or Sundog

I noticed this particularly bright "rainbow cloud" on my way to work yesterday around 7PM, and pulled off for a shot or two before it disappeared.

I saw one at around 5:30 pm EST yesterday also. Nice catch.

Thanks! Wow, cool. These things are just rare enough (around here at least) that I'm usually unprepared or otherwise unable to catch it.

We use to call these Sun Dogs. I don't know where this name came from. The colors of these are hard to catch sometimes. This one looks really good. Nice job!

Thanks! They usually show up in colder weather for sure, to form the flat ice micro crystals that make some of them so intense. Maybe this one was much higher than it appeared to be. Hmm
