Yeah, I don't get this thread. Someone calls you to photograph their event. Isn't this what you want?

And why do you make it sound like you're confined to a small, darkly lit corner of the room? Can't you move around and snap candids? I would think a 50mm 1.8 or whatever would be fast enough.

Have you ever been to a Marine/Navy Ball?
I did snap candids also, those are fine.

They wanted me to take shots like this
