So is nikon a better company than canon

I will probably gain no friends with this, but my opinion is 6 of one half a dozen of the other in a 1-1 comparison. It comes down to which bells and whistles you prefer to have and which works best for you ergonomically.

I have no idea which is better. Comparisons I saw showed either is sometimes better and sometimes worse. As a non-photographer who was looking for a decent camera for some specific things I bought a Canon for a few reasons:
20% because I was already used to Canon P&S cameras and just have good experience with and think they are comfortable.
20% because almost all photographers I spoke with (here in my area) recommended Canon, which also means used options (for lenses, etc.) are much more likely.
20% because the model I chose was the most I was willing to spend and I thought it was the best value, better than Nikon lower priced model but maybe not Nikon just one price above, but I didn't want to spend so much.
20% because I read a lot about Nikon being aware of a defect in some models (some of those I considered) and the way they dealt with it was to ask to ship the camera back for repairs. Some of the customer service stories I found were disturbing... I have no idea about Canon though...
So I'm 80% sure I made the right choice :)
But I don't let that last 20% disturb me... :)

This is not an issue.
The camera is a means to an end.
Ideas are the only issue worthy of discussion.

I would go for canon because they own the long ugly white lenses.

:waiting: Seriously.....This topic....AGAIN?
No Ryan. This is a completely different topic. He asked if Nikon is a better COMPANY than Canon. For some reason it turned into Canon vs Nikon cameras again. Since canon owns the majority of the DSLR market, there is no doubt it is a better company. :)

I'm waiting for DeWalt to start making cameras and lenses. I think DeWalt Yellow would be just schnizzle!

I am a camera fanboy (who uses Nikon because I always have, love the look of the glass and the ergonomics) but I did want to add a sports-shooter point.

Canon was the first into the ff, high iso body and long lenses. Thus a sports shooter could use a faster shutter speed with a reasonable aperture and still get good images.

With the advent of the Nikon D3 and D3s, the ball game changed and there was only the obstacle of the cost to switch to overcome. Nikon helped many professionals over this barrier, thus the now 50:50 in many sportshooter circles particularly in the US.

Oh boy are YOU on the wrong forum.

I personally think Canon is a better company although they both have great cameras these days. I don't know the d700 but the T3i or the 60d or the 7d are all great entry level cameras from Canon. Go on the B+H site to see them all...

What is "better"?

It's all religion, and it's all variable.

There is undoubtably a better choice... but people are so wrapped up in their emotional/financial investment that they can't come to grips with the fact that they may have made the "lesser choice".

As some said, both are fine. Both take pictures well. (however, Nikon still is the high-ISO king and that's pretty much indisputable if you look at comparison tests... Canon should be absolutely embarrassed)

...but then there is the variability. So right now I can say that... but then Canon releases their next model and puts Nikon to shame. (or they could, anyway)

Once you've bought into a system it's best to stick with the system until there is some overwhelming reason to jump.

Me, personally, I think the ergonomics and controls on the Canon are absolutely horrible, and they remain consistently bad because they have to keep from jacking with those used to them... beyond that I can't say much.

Wow, shame on me. Until someone pointed out the actual question - which is a better COMPANY - I didn't notice it. My brain automatically saw "which is a better CAMERA". Can't really provide any insight on that one as I've always been a Nikon guy. I have HEARD that Canon is better to deal with, but I don't personally know.

I saw it, but I knew it would instantly devolve into this, so I just ignored it.:lol:

In order to truly answer the OPs question, it must be narrowed down as to it's meaning? "Better company" means what? Who makes better products overall? Which is a better company to work for? Who makes more money (after all, that's the real purpose for being in business)? Which one has the best value for the money spent?

Too broad of a question, IMPO.
