Send them one without the reds being posterized. It's going to print like ****. Trust me. I work for a newspaper.

Also, in the first two you missed the focus. 3 looks to be your best bet, but the reds are awful in all of them and will print poorly.

ok thanks , not sure what reds being posterised means.
where do you think the focus point is on the first two ? I was trying for the goalies face.

It appears to be sharpest on the net on the first 2.

On all of the photos, the reds blend together and have a very unnatural gradation to them. They're also very saturated and would look very bad in print, especially on newspaper stock.

ok thanks again. I'll see what I can adjust

I'm guessing by your shot selection that the local team is in red. In that case I'd say 1, 3, or 4 are worth submitting. You captured a good action pose in each of them, and the jersey numbers are clearly visible - useful in cross referencing against a roster to pull the player's name. As someone who played high school soccer, all three players would be happy with these pictures in the paper. Players #3 and #14 get face time, and player #4 has proof that he got a shot on net. In #2, the aftermath of the shoot looks a bit nonchalant, so many players makes the frame seem crowded, and the goalie is slightly obscured - no need to consider this one since you have shot 1.

I'm not as worried about the focus being a little off, since I don't expect newsprint to carry details as fine as other stock. (I would suggest you consider a somewhat smaller aperture, to increase your depth of field, when shooting fast-moving sports such as this. If you're shooting full manual you can still keep the quick shutter speed.) I agree that the reds might not print well, but since the uniforms are out of your control you'll just have to play around with the image to see.

ok thanks, I"ll try to do some work on the reds

Only #3. It has the most dynamic action. Let the local paper decide about the reds.

Shots of backs of heads just doesn't cut it for publication, eliminating #1 and #2.

In #4, #19 is just a spectator and not directly involved in the action.

Are these all you have after 90 minutes, no real football action in any of them none of them have good focus, are you shooting stood up ?

Gary is trying to say that shooting soccer, and most sports, is best done from a camera perspective that is lower than the players eye level.

Shooting from a knee, or even sitting on the ground, makes the players seem bigger and more powerful, while also minimizing background distractions.

ok thanks , was just passing by the field and stopped by for some shots, couldn't find a school official to ask for access to sideline so I was shooting from behind fence

Next time, don't look for an official to ask. Just go to the sideline, fo real.
