Does the camera really matter that much???

no... just if its a non adjustable camera theres no point in going into the fact the picture is shot against all know principals of street photography.
looks just like a snapshot driving by a parking lot..

so you don't like my white socks guy photo?


why not just say that from the beginning?

instead of the "was this shot with a camera phone?"

too fast a day to be messing with settings for most of it.

I took his photo because I was shooting the city parade and noticed him standing away from the crowds back from the street while everyone else lined the street. It made him stand out to me from a curiosity perspective (not to mention the attire).
And yes, I am that backlogged im still going through memorial day pics.

I realize it isn't anything spectacular for a pic, just standing there, away from everyone. Memorial day. He was very solemn barely watched. Seemed like a guy really having a memorial with something to remember.

I prefer the closer crop, though I might like to see it in color rather than the conversion, and maybe a tiny bit more space above the head of the man without the hat. There's and interesting element of a repeating slope - first red car, man's balding head, second red car...and the colors are interesting - all black, white, and red.

i never comment on content sense thats a variable and its your shot...

so your saying that you cant shoot a good picture in auto?
cause...i can. and have. Kit lens, full auto, still got a good picture.

I find the methodology to be far less important than the result.
I don't need to know how a picture was shot to determine what i like and don't like about it.
i only need to know those details if i am going to critique and offer suggestions on changes i would make, OR if i am going to nitpic procedure based on predetermined notions on what the "proper" settings are for a particular shot.

Like Limr, I also prefer the crop. and i dont need to know a single detail about what camera was used, or what settings were used to figure that out.
now, if the OP were asking for specific details on how he could improve...i might ask for more details. but he simply asked which picture was preferred.

thanks. I really wasn't looking at it from that perspective. came real close to deleting this but decided it was too big in the batch of 400 from the day. This one and one of a woman sitting in the graveyard by herself seem to deserve it's place amongst the cheering an flags so I just decided to keep the image. i'll change the crop. thanks

auto turns your expensive dslr into a $99 point and shoot...
if you don't understand the fundamentals of photography why are you here trying to talk like you know anything...
if he would have just answered the question you all would have read what the point was but you all just want to jump all over everyone on here...

The photos look like they were just snapped quickly without much thought to framing etc. I've done sports/events, it take a lot of practice and learning to get good at framing and composing shots as things are happening.

If the first one wasn't named what it is, I don't know if I would have noticed anything other than a couple of people getting into their car. It looks like you need to work on your timing - having the other guy in the shot getting into the car detracts from the man standing there (I think you're reading more into it than what is shown in the photo).

The one in front of the store probably would have been better if you'd waited another split second til the guy plunked his butt all the way down on the step so he wasn't blocking the other person - would have been more interesting to see them interacting or reacting to the parade, and it looks like the camera was focused on the logo to the left. If there are a lot of windows, whatever is reflected in the window becomes part of the image/background.

The third one has people on the left and right cut off - in this case the people along the road watching are part of the scene so I think it helps to think about how they look in the composition (and it looks like the photo needs to be straightened). So I guess I'd say if it was cropped and straightened the third one would be the best of the three showing the parade and the holiday.

it seems like you are the one here trying to act like you know something.
how do you know its only good to me? what data are you basing this statement on? certainly not any facts since you have not seen the picture.
getting on someone for using a tool that is part of their camera...classy.
why do you care if he is shooting in auto? he didnt ask for critique, just which picture you preferred.
if thats too complicated a question for you, accusations of ignorance are pointed in entirely the wrong direction.
