What's new

Some beginner pics from Xmas.

One thing that stands out is on pic #1 and#3 you seem to be using the pop up flash..It is casting a unflattering harsh light that reflects off of the ball ornament..Invest in a speedlite that you can use off camera. The focus looks off as well. Mainly in the full shot of the tree..

#1 odd composition.
#2 needs more light at the top.
#3 on-camera flash did you no favors. Also not a good composition.

Thanks for the tips guys... gunna try again this evening to get better images of the same things - learning is fun.

I agree with the previous comments, so I am going to suggest something for you to try. If you can, get your flash off your camera, as the images #1 and # 3 look like you are using your flash on camera.. If you can't get it off camera, or even if you can, try using a diffuser or a small soft box, the kind that fit on your flash. This will go a long way to preventing the "hot spots" you have in these images.

Have a look at something like this - LumiQuest Softbox III - For Softer Photo Lighting or this - LumiQuest Pocket Bouncer - LumiQuest. These are just examples of the sort of thing I am suggesting. There are lots of other variations on this type of equipment as you can see here - Light Modifiers | B&H Photo Video .

If you are a bit of a "do-it yourselfer", then there is always this sort of thing - 10 Minute Light Diffuser or this - DIY Reflector-Diffuser as well as lots of other types of "home" projects. Google is your friend.

Hope this helps.
