Here's what sucks worse:
Years ago, I had a bunch of tools stolen from my truck. Dutifully called the local constabulary and made a report. That done, I then filed a claim with my insurance carrier for replacements. Three weeks later, I get a check so I can go buy new tools.
A month later, the cops call, wondering if I'm home (uh, well, duh.... yes! This was before cell phones!) Uniformed officer arrives with some of my tools for me to identify. "Yes, those are mine.... see my initials stamped in them?" Seems the barstard broke into 47 vehicles that night, stealing anything and everything. He was caught red-handed with a bunch of the booty in the trunk of his car. But I don't get my stuff back... they 'need them for evidence'.
The insurance company then sends me a letter saying, in effect, since the property was recovered, I need to pay them back. Begrudgingly, I do.
Fast forward 7 years. The county attorney never does prosecute the scumbag..... for anything! Once the statute of limitation expires, I call and ask for my tools back. Turns out,
the city claimed it was 'abandoned property' and sold it all at a public auction.
I wish you a happier resolution, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
