For specifics, how can I better meter my shots(other than acquiring a hand-held meter)?

#1- An all right picture (I really don't like the outfit). The sky is blown out and I'm losing the shadows near her chest.

#2- Looks slightly overexposed. Sky's blown out. I like the pose even though her leg disappears.

#3- Totally not doing it for me. The makeup is weird and so is the facial expression/pose. Le sky.

#4- I like this composure the best, but the lighting seems weird. Too bright on the right side and too dark on the left.

Other than what has been mentioned #4 seems to be the best. #2 in the second set might be better if you crop the sides a bit near the railroad.

Thanks for the input! How do I avoid overexposing the sky? Do I just try to avoid it in a shot where the foreground is dark/sky is bright, or is there something else I can do?
