He's cute! I would like to suggest that for close portraits you use at least a 55mm, or preferably higher lens so you don't get any distortion.

I'm new to photography, so this may seem like a dumb question....but which ones have distortion?

Flash is way too bright. Using the on camera flash for portraits is going to do nothing but cause hotspots and that 'deer in headlights' look.

You could put a diffuser over the external flash.

Would never use flash, looks very unnatural. More of a snap shot than anything. Dont place babies face in the middle. Apply rule of third.

Flash only looks unnatural if you don't know how to use it properly....

I'm new to photography, so this may seem like a dumb question....but which ones have distortion?

That's not a dumb question. It's hard to see. I'm just letting you know that using a wider lens for close ups causes distortion. Like big noses and such. Also, try bouncing your flash off the ceiling or a wall. I think you'll find the results to be better. The shadow right behind his head won't be there and it'll give his face more shape with the light not being direct.
