I haven't been shooting for too long, but recently I've decided to put a lot more effort into my photos. Been trying crazy things...

Like hanging out my car window while letting my little sister drive to get a picture of my mom's Corvette.

Or putting my strobe on a wireless shoe and trying strange and out of ordinary angles.

Or getting my brother very drunk and taking some fun pictures.

My photography, though, needs some advice. So, TPF readers and posters, what ya say?

I think with car photography (and most action photography) there should be room in front of the car (or subject) rather than behind it. In my opinion in makes for a more pleasing photo. When you show a sports car and no room in the front it looks like its about to fall right out of the picture. The car is nice and sharp but the only thing I dislike is the crop.

I kind of agree, actually. I had issues with framing the photo though because my sister is a horrible driver and I was scared to hang too far out as to accidently shorten my life span in a hurry. However, here's another photo with a different crop that I didn't like as much. Thoughts?

Again, there's not much room in front of the car (just more to the side). Like you, I like the first shot better. But I totally understand how it would be hard to frame it hanging out of a car! I've been wanting to try shots like this for a while.

I have some advice. Try and find someone with more driving experience than a 14 year old girl. Also, something I found helpful... I tried having a fast setting and a bit slower one. I took about 150ish photos that day doing this. Spent about 2 hours (I had about 1,000 critters in my hair) hanging out a window fearing for my life as my sister drove. After all that I found that if you slow your speed too much it looks messy, and poor sharpness too. If you go too fast the background and car is far too sharp giving it a static, sitting still kind of feeling. I had to find a good setting that allowed me to give the car movement, but keep good sharpness and detail. Something that you gotta keep in mine, too, is speed. We had to move about 70mph to get it so I could make the camera fast enough where I could hold it by hand without messing up the details and sharpness but still get some background movement going on. This was an unseen problem. At 50mph the camera was too difficult to show movement in the scene without having camera shake, and faster settings made the scene seem too static. So we finally found our sweet spot on speed (70mph) that allowed me to get the image I wanted. These photos took more than photography skills, but some critical thinking (and bravery).

Only real suggestion from me:

In #2, looked like you were going for the WHOA LIGHT IN THE BOX thing, but you didn't put the flash in the box lol. Try it again with the flash in the box and see how it comes out.

Hah, yeah I had that as an inspiration, but the photo was taken in a busy restaurant while we were having a birthday dinner with my sister (in the photo). I had the wireless trigger on my flash and just set the flah on the table under her face on a whim that it might look cool.
