Sheets of paper. Narrow beam spotlight from above, underside of paper lit by reflected light from white surface just below the lower edge of the camera view. The beam has to be quite narrow, otherwise the reflected light would reach deeper into the space between the sheets of paper.

Very pleasing image, and nice control over the light.

Thank you for posting these images. In our photo club, we've had some workshops on working with light, where we practiced with sheets of paper and used different lighting schemes to develop the visual appearance. It is definitely worth doing, to see how the different ways of lighting the setup can completely change the mood and appearance of the result.

Close! It was actually lot from below, about 2.5 feet below the paper and 1 foot in front. Narrowed down with some cardboard strips. And there was a sheet of card stock above to reflect light back down.

At a guess I would say wither layers of paper or fine plastic sheeting in a dark environment with short focus flash. Either that or it was in bright condition and its been inverted?
