Bought myself a nikkor 85mm 1.8 and I'm just starting to realize how much fun fast glass is. I was trying to get some decent action shots of my mom cooking but when I shoot in burst mode my camera freezes up after about 7 or 8 frames, and I then have to wait like 5 seconds before I can shoot again. I figure it has to do with buffer size (I have a d90) but it's really annoying and I was wondering if there's any way to work around this.

Also, what is the best focus method when shooting with a razor thin DOF on moving subjects. I'm inexperienced with the 3d tracking feature on my new d90 so these were focused manually but I ended up with more blurry than clean shots.

You could shoot in jpeg instead of RAW, and the camera should be more responsive. Also, it may be your (SD/flash - I'm not sure what the D90 uses) card reaching its limitation and causing a bottleneck. My T2i does the same thing.

Rez' is correct - the problem is either your camera's buffer filling up, or your card speed. Your alternatives are: Shoot at a lower quality setting, shoot more slowly and/or get a card with a higher throughput speed.

As far as focusing, I would suggest single-servo AF using only a single focusing point.

JPEG helps but it only gives me a few more frames. I'm using a SDHC card is there anything faster?

CF cards are capable of being faster than SD cards. Provided you get one that is faster.

The buffer write speed is usually the limiting factor, not the card speed.

Card speed has more to do with upload to the computer speed.
