Sony or Nikon?

Most indoor sports have low lighting... at least the way a camera sees light. That means fast glass (large apertures), and High ISO.... to get the shutter speed fast enough to stop the action. If you go out and do some research, you will see that every major non-biased review and testing site all say that the Sony's (all of them) have much poorer low light ability than Nikon and Canon. They are extremely noisy at anything over 1600. Also the viewing system they use can be very difficult to use in low light from everything I have read. (I have never used a Sony personally... But I did a lot of research toward the end of last year about the different bodies ... buying a gift (DSLR) for my girlfriend. I went with Nikon). Also keep in mind that if you ever do want higher end (PRO) bodies, glass, and accessories... Sony does not have any PRO equipment! So you can't upgrade.....

The fast FPS is a joke if you can't use it when you want it. I prefer to take the shots I want.. instead of doing the "Spray and Pray" routine.. and hope I get a decent shot! Good luck with your search!

The Sony A900, A700, and A77 are pro equipment, so you don't know what you are talking about. The A900 and A700 are still available on the net. The A99 is in the wings as well to replace the A900. As far as noise is concerned, the photos I have seen, indicate that all cameras over 1600 have noise issues with minimal differences between brands.

The don't make the A900 any more... or the A700... wonder why?? So NO, Sony has no PRO equipment in their lineup, do they? I have heard the A77 called a Consumer / Prosumer (basically a crop sensor) body.. not a PRO! They also do not have any full frame sensors in their "current" lineup! They don't have professional support... and don't have enough market share for many aftermarket manufactures to even both making compatible gear! And I will believe the A99 when I see it. So how do I not know what I am talking about.. I can quote a lot of this of this off the Sony website.. and the rest from well respected test sites, like DPReview! Nikon and Canon both have significant better noise handling and High ISO capability.

I know that you CHOOSE not to acknowledge that.. but that is not my problem! Have a good night!

I have to agree that the a77 is more of a prosumer camera.

But, the vast majority of customer have no interest in going pro.

Sony is building their business the smart way. Getting cash flow and establishing their name as a camera manufacturer. The rest will come in time.

It's unfortunate the a99 has been delayed so long.

You don't have to want to go PRO, to want the best gear! It seems like the majority of "Pros" (If you want to call them that) are the ones using entry level gear anyway. But a lot of enthusiasts / advanced hobbyists want the best gear they can get... which usually means "Pro" gear. That is my whole point when I post something like this... it is aimed at someone who may advance that far, and that could be anyone!

The Sony G lineup is pro glass. there is also a slew of Zeiss glass.

Sigma makes alpha mount versions of most lens they make. So does Tamron.

I can even use older glass since the alpha bodies are manual focus friendly.

I don't feel I lack headroom with my Sony.

I agree.. there is some good glass available! The German made Zeiss is excellent! I have read concerns about the "Zeiss" glass made by Sony in Japan (not made by Zeiss) doesn't quite live up to the Zeiss standard. Not having used it.. I don't know! (and to be honest.. I don't feel compelled to research it exhaustively either since I am happy with my Nikon!)

I don't consider most Sigma or Tamron to be Pro quality. Very few of their lenses live up to that.. and since they have to be reverse engineered, there is always the possibility for compatibility issues.

I am glad you are happy with your Sony!
