I really enjoy the thought of high speed photography.

That being said, I would like to do it more, but due to the lack of equipment it is tedious at best. I find myself trying to time the flash with the event by hand, which results in hours of disappointment with exposures done too early/late, and also results in dozens of wasted eggs. (if you laughed at that, you know exactly what I mean.)

I have seen items like this. (no, I'm not affiliated with this auction at all, just something I was looking at...)... Sound Trigger for High Speed Flash Photography (HSF-ST) - Extremely Sensitive! | eBay

and have also read articles on some $20 DIY sound triggers, but I'm leery of their performance.

Anyone have any success stories with sound triggers (or laser triggers etc.) that don't break the bank? I'd love to keep this under a hundred bucks.

Thanks in advance.

I'm well aware that this suggestion breaks your budget (by quite a bit) but for any others interested you might want to look at Cognisys products:
Cognisys - Products
They've also a few articles dotted around the site and links to flickr photographers (many of which might also be using other setups cheaper/different to items like the stopshot).

Boy, if I were a pro and had an endless budget I'd be all over everything in that link.

I can see that. For me, i want to blow stuff up and catch it on film. Eggs, christmas ornaments filled with jello, blocks of clay, etc. etc. etc. I'm a pure hobbiest, so I don't want a huge investment, but I dno't mind spending a little if it gets the desired effect. ;)

They also have laser triggers on Ebay for about $25, but it doesn't appear to have any way to adjust the delay for the trigger. Seems almost unusable if that's the case.

Oh..... and since when are long lenses not in the "neat toys" category?!?

Good idea in theory, but the problem is when I look at a schematic like that, my eyes go crossed. Don't get me wrong, I'm a handy guy. I work on my own cars, do all my own gunsmithing and I'm not scared of math............

Its just that I don't know what I'm looking at when I see one of those things. If I did however, it seems like a perfect and logical solution to my problem.
