Stars: Experimenting with layers

The below image is a sample of 41 images layered together and merged. I honestly don't understand the difference in laying vs stacking. Anyhow, I'm looking at honest opinions on what you guys think.

In Photoshop, layers can each have their own blending mode, can be grouped, and there are several other options;

Interesting, I'm justing Gimp right now…but hopefully Santa got my letter asking for CS6.

Anyhow, I was originally trying for a star trail but I didn't set the times long enough. So I figured I would mess around with layering.
