As for EMI, as @Derrel suggests, it might be possible. I'm too lazy to download the whole article, but this would suggest that EMI can "degrade photographic recording"

This is DEFINITELY not 'banding' in the sense of quantization error. This feels optical to me. Perhaps the high frequency detail in the trees are interacting in such a way to cause a random moire pattern?

My first thought was moiré but I at a loss as to how that could happen.
