Strobing Attempt c&c

was bored and decided to attempt to take some pics of my son during sunset (730ish). I was trying to use a 2 speedlight set up, but just figured out that a Canon 420EX does not shoot in manual mode when using radio triggers (WACK).. I guess that sucker is going on ebay and replace it with a Canon 430EX. So I ended up using a single Canon 430EXII shot thru a white umbrella. I am trying to practice with off camera flash whenever I can. Let me know what you think. Oh and the speedlite was shot with 1/8 of power.
1. f5.6 1/50 ISO 3200 70MM (needed a fast lens for this type of low light situation)

The first one looks very natural, I wouldn't have been able to tell you used a light, which is good if that's what you're going for. I don't think the background adds to the shot though.

#2 looks harsh... I think it's a touch overexposed perhaps? And his black hat is just starting to get lost in the background.

Yea background was wack on number 1. Thanks for the comment and thanks for not using the term "thats my .02 cents"
