It says 3:43 AM and I'm awake!

STUPID!

You should have given me a call.
I knew I should not have had that second glass of ice tea for dinner. Now I'm dressed for work again with about 3 hours of sleep. This is going to be a long day

You have my utter sympathies, both of you! I can't tell you how often I've headed for work on only a few hours' sleep. Too much caffeine, too much wine, stress, busy-brain syndrome <<---(I made that one up years ago)...whatever...insomnia sux...:grumpy:

"Busy Brain Syndrome" Yep, those nights when you just can't find the "OFF" switch no matter how tired you are. Been there, done that and got the Tee Shirt.

Have that as well. Went to a sleep workshop (yeah, there are those) and I learned a few things - if you want to have a good night of sleep, you need to work at it and your get body to align its rhythms with that of the night (so it's not a quick fix). Alcohol disrupts sleep patterns, so it needs to be out of your system by bed-time. Eating a hard-to-digest meal or snack means that your body will be working to digest the meal, and that too will disrupt the sleep pattern. Since sleeping is a body rhythm, having a pattern to getting to sleep is very important, and reserving the bed for sleep gives the body the signal that it needs to get into sleep mode. There is a whole series of things you can/should do to counter the normal sleep pattern distuptors, and perhaps the first step is to figure out which one (or set) is contributing to the problem. I used to have really crappy sleep, and had to re-orient my thinking on this to make getting to sleep more purposeful. Now I "usually" have a good night, except when I slip into the bad old habits.

It's a lot like fitness and eating well. If you focus on it and are consistent, you'll get results. But it's so easy to be mentally careless and get diverted by normal living.

I've been randomly waking up between 3-4am the last couple of weeks. It's painful.

Ugh... Yeah. My problem tonight was that GIANT burger I ate at 7, combined with bust brain syndrome worrying about whether or not I'm going to get this job I'm going after. Could be a life changer, so kinda stressed about that.

Though my other problem is clearly that I haven't exercised consistently since October. I biked like crazy this past spring and summer and lost nearly 30lbs and was sleeping like a rock, but I hate exercise and love biking so that means I've been a real slackass all fall and winter and am suffering for it,

Ooooooo... You know I knew most of that except the reserving part. I read in bed. Maybe a bad idea.

Yeah, this sort of thing is a nuisance. It comes and goes with me. I've had periods of several months where I was up 2-3 nights a week for an hour or more and some periods where it happens, but not nearly that often. Fortunately I'm in one now where it rarely happens, maybe once every few weeks, so I'm generally awake at work.

Taking melatonin and avoiding very bright light sometimes helps get me drowsy again.

My child has prevented me from getting a good night sleep for the last 14 months. You get no sympathy from me.

A while back, well almost 40 years ago had some sleep issues. Had a get together with a hypno-therapist. This method has put me to sleep many years.
Start counting back from 50, 1 count with each breath. only think of the count. If and when your mind wonders, simply return to the count. don't stress
over losing count. Dont put marit on the distraction. just feel oh well and continue on. Rarely will you repeat the 50 count...ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Ed

The occasional times when I do have trouble sleeping, I just use some meditation techniques (Transcendental Meditation) I learned years ago.. and boom, off to dreamland again! I also once took a course in creative dream therapy once (sounds kind of new age-y, but it works!)... so I look forward to going to bed... and dreaming, and that seems to help.. as I am relaxed and drowsy the instant I lay down.

Here is the book we used in class.... it take some practice and perseverance... but it is fun, and really works.

Yeah, but anyone who has kids goes through that. We went through that three times. Our first-born was a "challenge" for the first two years. The next one was pretty quiet after six months, and by that time the older one began to sleep through the night. Our third was fussy for the first four months, then quieted down. Fun started when they started becoming teenagers. That's when we learnt the meaning of the phrase "little kids, little problems, big kids, big problems". We somehow survived that passage by all three, and we now enjoy our moments together.

They call it "passed out" for a good reason, assuming a sufficient quantity has been consumed.

I need white noise to fall asleep. I put the timer on for the TV and choose some boring program, like CNN or a bad movie (not a shoot 'em up), and within 30 minutes I'm off to dreamland.

You can probably sense my hot breath causing fog on the outside of your bedroom window and that's causing you to stir a bit. My apologies. I will try to be quieter tonight...
