Subject too dark

Hello,

Would appreciate some help re: this picture. I would like to make the subject (my son jumping off a rock) lighter.

Canon XSi
Tamron 70-300mm
f4, 70mm
1/500
iso 100
shutter priority
spot metering.

Is there anything I could have done with these settings/equipment to increase the lighting on the subject?

The spot meter is in the centre of the image ... which just misses your son ... which means the meter was reading the lighter background.
Now, since you are taking a picture of a moving subject ... it would not be easy to press the shutter button exactly as your son entered the centre.

You could have set metered off of you son first (before the jump) and hold it with the AE lock while you recomposed for the shot.

Are you shooting in manual? You should be able to meter off your son before he jumps and set the exposure ahead of time. If that ends up blowing out the brighter background I guess you could try the flash.

Considering the background is properly exposed and his boy is in the shade I'd say it's to dark. But I could be wrong.

With all honesty, I don't think there is a whole lot wrong with the original. Maybe a LITTLE bit more detail. But I kind of like the silhouette, it gives a graphic appearance which for some reason implies motion to me.

Thank you. The clothing is dark which is probably a big part of the problem. This has happened in other pictures which is my primary reason for asking the question.
Steve01 - out of curiosity, what did you do to lighten the picture?

I opened the image twice in ACR.
Once as is, and the 2nd +3.50 exposure.

I made them both layers in the same document and used a mask to combine them.

You had a well exposed image here and the boy was in black.
As already stated, fill flash would be a good option here.
