Suggestions for working with kids

A few shots of my friends children from my son's birthday party. I enjoy working with kids but I know they are not always attentive. What suggestions do you have for getting them in the mood and best ways to get those candid shots?

The best kids photographer plays with the kids. Some of the best pics I've seen have been because the photographer used their camera as part of the 'play' time. Let them see the LCD, And maybe take a few pics of another child. When they are comfortable with the whole experience is when you get the 'real' child.
