Suggestions on a good point and shoot

We are getting ready to take our yearly Disney trip. I do not want to lug my rebel around. I would really like to get a decent point and shoot for pictures. What are some good ones?

As with any equipment recommendation, your budget is the real determiner, but, my preference would be for the Canon G12/G1X.

Yep, I have the S95 myself and it is great.

I've got the Canon G12, and can't imagine being without it. Even if I'm lugging the 5D and/or 40D around, the G12 is with me.

I like the idea of the G1X, too. I just need to decide if I want to spend that kind of money and not have the same macro capability the G12 affords...

I actually prefer the S95 more. I believe the S95 is a sony sensor which has been known to work well while the S100 is a 2nd generation Canon sensor. The first generation didn't have the greatest results and from what I've seen the 2nd generation one doesn't out perform the S95's sony sensor. The only issue is that if you want the extra zoom (3.8x vs 5x or GPS or 1080p video), go with the S100. In terms of image quality, especially low light, my pick is the S95.

If you are NOT looking for a "POCKET" size camera, go with the Canon G series. You can even share the hotshoe flash with your Rebel.

- Manual control.
- Hotshoe for external flash.
- RAW format supported.
- Nice optics.
- Diaptor add-on available. You can get the Canon 500D macro diaptor or something similar to get some great macro shots (A users in POTN forum use the Canon G and produced some nice macro shots)

You have manual control and RAW format with the S-series too.

I swear by the Fuji X10 now. It is an awesome camera with jpegs like I have never got before plus full controls and RAW if you want it. The EXR modes are amazing and don't get me started on how much I love the panorama feature. It goes everywhere with me and I have sold my Canon SLR and L lenses!

Now of course it cant compete with the L lenses, but the quality is very very good and for general photography I don't think it can be beaten. Make sure you get one with the new sensor and there will be no issues!

Ok.. all admit it... I LOVE DISNEYLAND!!!! The wife, kids and i all have Annual Passports (and we live 550 miles away)... and Disneyland photography is AWESOME!! (i'm using caps to stress the coolness).

However, I hate.. hate... hate.. lugging around my DSLR through the park. Our new favorite Point-n-Shoot Disney camera is the Canon ELPH 300 HS (Like all p&s its already been replaced by the ELPH 320 HS).

1) It's smaller then a normal smart phone.. easily fits in pockets.
2) Back-lit CMOS is good in low light. Great for fireworks, indoors and ride photos.
3) 5x zoom (24-120mm). Wide angle is great for group shots in tight places. Zoom is good for when you need that reach.
4) It was cheap! We paid $120 .. We've lost more cameras in the park then i like to admit.

We've gone though a few camera's... but everybody likes the ELF 300HS the best (we have 2 of them).

Here are some pictures my kids took during our last trip (winter 2011) with the Elph 300HS.

These are from my 10 year old son...

And a picture of my son taken by my 12 year old daughter...

Are they the best pictures in the world? No... But for a ~$100 point and shoot being used by a 10 year old kid they aren't bad.

I have taken THOUSANDS of dollars worth of gear into the park, but we always have more fun with cameras we are not afraid to break.... Just my .002c. (from a Disney freak).

Oh yea.. almost forgot... ~$50 underwater housing... We picked one up a few months ago, cant wait to try it out in a few months.
