Suggestions Please

Both are great, but look at the lens line ups as well. Buying into the system makes it expensive to switch brands later on. If you have in mind what types of lenses you are wanting to use, research them. Canon's pro glass is usually cheaper than Nikons. Nikon has a better wide angle zoom, Canon has a better prime lens lineup (IMHO). I know what system I would choose for portraiture, but its totally up to you. Do you have close friends or family already shooting? If so, borrowing lenses is another thing to think about if you get the same brand.
 
if i was starting with $2000 i'd get a D90 $975, sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 macro about $420 and a Nikkor 55-200mm DX VR about $200, MB-D80 about $170 and an extra battery $40. and got about $200 left for a bag or tripod or something.

however, if you plan on shooting in the 300-1200mm range, you should probably consider canon. anything under that, both are worth looking at.
