There is something about the yellow skin and yellow eyes mixed with the black background that seems off to me.

Maybe my brain is thinking, "Well if this kid is outside in the sun, then it would look like he was outside and if the kid was in a studio with a black backdrop, then he would not be so yellow".

It sounds like you like it, so that is a good thing.
