Sweet 16 Photoshoot

sometimes i do wonder if the members of this forum just use forums to get c n c or if any of you bother to enter national and international exhibitions to see if you get acceptances.

No flash and flash. Given I was metering off the sky in the first picture it still would have been hard to properly expose her without blowing the sky. These were take at the same time of day.

Edit: These were taken with a strobe, not my flash set-up.

1. Please don't hijack someone else's thread.

2. What does participation in an Internet forum have to do with entry in to exhibitions of any level?

3. Please don't hijack someone else's thread.

why include the sky in a portrait. in the 2nd one she is well exposed and the sky is barely visible....plus there is a speck that is blown on the tip of her nose ;)

you are repeating yourself

its not a case of hijacking. there are some knowledgable people on here and some that know very little and some that think they know more than they do. by entering exhibitions you are getting experienced independant judges making decisions on images thats all

I was including the sky because there it looks really nice when you underexpose the sky and expose the person. There is a blown part on her nose because her face was shiny lol not because I played with the curves too much.

OP:
Use a flash, you will get better results with a strobe but you either need to be close to an outlet or have portable power which is hard to find these days. What time of day is the shoot at?

Not saying these pictures are good I'm just trying to demonstrate the difference a flash can make.

I just have a cheap $23 speedlite that I got off ebay. I stand it straight up and I have a piece of white cardboard cut out and and elastic around the bottom to attach it to my flash for a diffuser. This probably makes no sense so I'll draw a diagram.

wow I didn't know you were an artist, too! lol thanks for the drawing though. pretty creative.

I appreciate your imput and your photos look great. However, I'm trying to take it to the next level. I really want to deliver on this shoot. So, Misscream's photo with the strobe is sort of what i'm chasing.

this one looks really good. I'll be shooting a little earlier in the day so Im hoping for a little more sunshine. Outlets will be hard to come by, i'm assuming. was this taken w/a strobe? what strobe?

I got a cheap kit on ebay, which is frowned upon but mine came with a one year warranty. I love them. I used a soft box on the strobes as well. This is the set I have. 600W LIGHTING FLASH STROBE STUDIO KIT PHOTOGRAPHY LIGHT - eBay (item 350403348612 end time Dec-13-10 01:56:26 PST)

These pictures were taken at around 1pm (on my back deck so excuse the trees..) but as you can see you can get a great dramatic sky anytime during the day. I have used really long extension cords before to power them but I have been trying to get a Vegabond (portable power system) forever but they are on back order. I've only ever used my other flash on camera with the diffuser but I'm sure you can get a similar look if you were to take your flash off camera. Someone more experienced can tell you more about that!

I was thinking that. like if I put the 430ex on a stand and use that for a little light. idk, im just freakin out and totally lost. I'm not ready for anything like this but I do wanna help them out.

Just search the forum for OCF I'm sure there are a ton of threads about it. Whatever you do dont buy one of the cheap cords from ebay, they say 3 meters or whatever but they are curled and can probably only stretch a couple feet.

anything I purchase will have to be local. I dont want to mess with shipping. I need to get this stuff and practice with it before the shoot. I wouldn't mind spending that money on that strobe though. do you have any other shots you've taken with this set up?
