What's new

Switching to Canon AND upgrading.

i would buy better glass before getting a better body. glass holds value, and bodies don't. i know lots of pros who don't care too much which body they use . . . but don't you dare expect them to use a sub par lens.

Ditto!

Ditto the thought on the glass over a camera body. Have you thought about investing in perhaps a used 20D (still an amazing camera) as well as the 24-70mm f/2.8? As someone else mentioned, bodies depriciate like crazy, meanwhile lenses, you can use 20 years down the road (barring they don't change their mount - which I can't see happening in the near future).
If this is true about a new 5D coming out, you will not have the oppurtunity in a few months to snag up a used one for a much lower price as everyone scrambles for the newer version.
That is my view anyways :)

Really Forza? I have a feeling they won't announce one... just because the camera is so perfect as is and it's only been 2 years.... which I realize is usually the right time... but I just have a feeling! :P Or maybe thats just wishful thinking.

I really don't know. I was just speculating. I was just prowling around a Canon forum, and everyone seems to think a 5D replacement will be this year. I'm really not a good source for Canon information. :)

I'm a woman actually, so don't assume all photographers on here are men :) I've been through every possibility there is- a 20D with a 24-70L and an 85mm, a 30D with just a 24-70L. I don't appreciate the implication that because I value the body right now I am unprofessional.

Jip, your comment was ignored because the original post clearly said, and I'll copy it word for word, "Ps. In case anyone suggests it, I've considered getting a 30D and getting an L series, but I know I'd want to upgrade within a year and am just gonna go straight for the 5D and pray they don't announce it's successor this fall."

Buying a 5D is not something you casually consider and do on a whim. Clearly I've investigated all the options and understand the pros and cons to upgrading to an L series now or starting off with the more expensive body. Financially, it makes sense for me to get the 5D right now and avoid wanting to upgrade within a year. With that said, I hate that so much on this forum turns into a debate. I was merely asking for lens suggestions. I have already made my mind up about the 5D as I stated in the original post so obviously getting a different body is *not* what I want to hear since my question was about lenses, not about alternative bodies. Let the snappy responses commence :)

And for the record, I don't think a non L series lens would necessarily be considered 'sub par' by all professionals in every venue of the photography industry. That statement makes you sound like a lens snob.

tr0gd0o0r- on the childrens portraiture forum I frequent someone suggested the 85mm would be perfect on a FF body and I think that I am going to go with that until I can upgrade in the winter to an L series. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to give me advice!

Remember that nearly all pro level lenses will delivery an image of similar sharpness. A pro level Tamron, Tokina and Sigma will deliver an image of similar resolution as an L. See photozone.de for lab testing results. So do not forget third party pro lenses ... they are not built as well as an L, but they are of equal sharpness.

Thanks Gary for the answer about the lenses :) I'm really starting to feel like the 85mm is the right solution for me right now on the full frame sensor. I have a lot of photo friends who've had great luck with the tamrons and sigmas so I will not rule them out for good.

I really think the basic gist of my suggestion was that better glass is a better long term invesment than a higher end body. If you can afford the 85 you mentioned that's great. I did not want to start some kind of debate I was merely giving you my opinion, this is the course I followed when buying my D70s and this is what I have suggested on other threads.

I understand. Like I said, I want something less than 400 but still a good lens. I have every intention to invest in something nicer in the future, just focusing on body right now for various reasons.
