T3i or D5100

So I'm buying my first dslr from bestbuy because I need to take advantage of their financing options. Anyways I want to pursue photography as a hobby/art. I'm looking into either the T3i or 5100d. The 5100 is 200$ off right now for 650 & the T$ i is 699$. Thoughts? Concerns? thanks in advance

I'd go for the T3i because Canon fits me and the D5100 not having a focus motor, but it's not about me. It's about you and what fits YOU and your needs.

Just kidding. Actually, I agree with MLeek (well, not about the T3i part...)--it's really a choice YOU have to make. Have you held them both to see if one FEELS better to you?

I love my D5100; I've been very happy with it. But I honestly think you will be happy with EITHER choice, so go to the store, hold them in your hands, see which one "feels" right...or...yeah...just toss a coin.

Is there a difference quality wise or are both cameras capable of taking the same photos

One other possible thing to consider: do you have friends or relative that have DSLRs, from whom you might be able to occasionally borrow lenses or such? That could tip the scales.
When I bought my DSLR last year, I seriously considered going with Canon, because I'd loved my little Powershot P&Ss--but my sister already had a D90 and a couple of lenses, so I went with Nikon and never looked back.

T2i and T3i are the same sensor. THere are just a few minimal upgrades in the T3i. Otherwise the image quality will be the same. Definitely a good option

Is the $100 difference between t2i and t3i worth it or should that go towards a lenses

Lens. Buy yourself the 50mm f/1.8. It'll make learning easier than the kit lens and it's uber sharp for the price! Also allows you a taste of low light capability of great lenses!

Nope. We have had this discussion before.
The EOS lenses all have the motor in them so there is no compatibility issue with auto focus.
We're splitting hairs here.

pick them both up, look through the view finder, play with the buttons and buy the one that feels the best. Both are great products with a ton of available accessories. I started out with Nikon because that is what my local dealer has. If he had had Canon I'm sure I would be just as satisfied.
