Taking B&W

How do you get the shadows right with the light.. and getting everything to be nice and crisp in color. It seems everytime I attempt, mine are more grey then black. And when edited the white gets washed out and I lose the whole picture. Any tips on shooting black and white? I shoot everything in color and then convert to B&W in photoshop.

Mostly it's practice. I generally use Nik filters to do the initial conversion to B&W and then work on the image, adjusting brightness and contrast in specific areas until I'm happy with the overall image.
