nice shots...I've always wondered, what's the trick with focusing on moving subjects like that?

I don't shoot much sports, but I do try to capture my son running occasionally, and I would like to do some snowboarding photography, but my shots always turn out blurry.

Do you just have to pan w/AF and then lock the focus and shoot while still panning?

There are many variables....... yes AF on of course, don;t know about canon but with nikon there are different AF settings, 1 of which is for moving objects. Bet you have something similar. You should also shoot at a faster speed to stop the action until you get to the point where your panning exactly matches the object, then slowly begin slowing down the shutter.
