The Coffee House

Not too far behind you. My target is Spring but if they piss me off or we get a house, I may go this year.
Bear - your post has a weird combination of mine and nick’s comments. Can you fix so it doesn’t look like I am giving up photography and selling my gear?

@nerwin As you travel though life, things you find pleasure in change. Sometimes the old becomes new again, sometimes it stays in the past, replaced by something new. Don't sweat it, you'll find your next path.

Be careful what you ask for when seeking retirement...it can get boring if you don't have a plan for "after." I didn't at first and found myself laying around like a fat slug and but for a friend who purchased a D7200, I might still be wedged in the cushions, remote in hand, chips an a soda at my side. I had taught photography for over 17 years but all film or alternative and I didn't have room for a darkroom at my house. Digital and a computer changed all that and I was off to the races doing lots of fun projects. My latest to split screen the old and new areas of downtown but only using Salted Paper, Kalitype and Cyanotype processes with digitally produced negatives. I built an 8x10 shed next to my house with AC, running water, drainage and fully insulated for all season use. I will keep you posted on my progress.

That's the idea, all I can do is try something new. Photography will always be there. I'm still going to keep a film camera or two in case I want to "play" but holding onto an expensive digital camera to collect dust isn't justifiable in my books. I'm hoping I'll find something I enjoy doing that makes me happy not stressed out. Photography has stressed me out in the last few years when it really shouldn't but I believe forcing yourself doing something that you deep down don't want to do anymore causes stress too.

The biggest question is what do I do with all my photos....

Wonderful! Mine is off another six to seven long years unless something drastic happens.
I think every day for this next month is going to feel like 6-7 long years!

I have been looking longingly at my cozy sweaters since May.
Yes! The only good things about summer are gardening and it is light enough for long walks with my dog after dinner.

Thanks for the advice! I am a little nervous that I will be bored but I have many thoughts on on how I will fill up my time. To start, I plan to focus on the long list of home projects I never had time or energy for. Also looking forward to having time and space to get back to painting. I am turning my office nook into an art area. I will probably join one of the local workout places so I can have a daily destination and a routine - hopefully that will help me transition from being used to having a daily schedule to suddenly having no commitments at all. Maybe pilates or yoga. I also have my photography and gardening hobbies to focus on and I plan to eventually volunteer or work part time or both. But nothing corporate - I am done with that for a while. And of course I plan to travel more!

Have you tried the little brush things that brace against and run along the ceiling and do the cutting in for you?

My retirement is official and beginning on 9/13 I will start all my long procrastinated on house projects beginning with my bedroom - paint and possibly some board and batten to give it some character since I like how it works with a minimalistic approach to the walls and "decor" items. It's been really difficult transitioning into a new stage of my life. I never thought I'd ever give up photography but here I am but deep down there's relief and some pressure lifted but it doesn't make it any easier selling camera equipment and my computer that I've worked hard for to own. But I can't just let it sit and collect dust that its been for months. I'd rather use the money to do something else that will benefit my life more appropriately right now.

I hope you find what you are looking for. If you like photography but have lost motivation, try another form of artistic expression. Painting, sculpture, poetry... if you do any art please come back and share it in our art thread!
Good lord - the way you replied in the post up there, part of Nerwin's post comes through like your OWN words, right after you announcing your retirement is official! So - CONGRATS on the retirement being official at last - and I'm happy to see you're not selling off all your gear and computer so you can buy interior paint for the house.

September 13 is right around the corner. You must be feeling a mite twitchy right now. It takes a minute to sink in, that you don't have to get to work anymore. Huzzah! :icon_cheers:

I think snowbear inadvertently combined our quotes when he tried to reply.

Yeah, yeah; blame the bear.

Heading to Southern Maine next week. Son # 1 and DIL flying in, and of course lazy lobster is already there. We may swing through Finger Lakes area on way home. Whether we do, or not, I'll be kicking, screaming, and fighting the whole way back.

I'm tossing a coin to determine visiting the International Cryptozoology Museum, in Portland. Sounds interesting, but I keep thinking it'll be an empty building.

If you can go a bit further north, about 75 minutes from Portland is the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden. It was beautiful and worth the drive north. And they have these giant trolls hidden throughout. So amazing!
