DW and I went to one of our granddaughters' Winter Concerts (she's in choir) and it was absolutely magical. They did some of the expected seasonal songs, but they also did a couple in Hawaiian, a couple in an African language, and a couple in Latin. For one of the Latin ones, they turned down all the lights and held (electric) candles, and it was goosebump good.

When I hear the term boomer these days I think of people who are 65+.

I'm at the front of the Boomers started in 1946, anyone 60-78 falls in the category. I've lived in two centuries, saw the birth of computers, internet, a man walk on the moon, color tv and a lot of other advancements. I know several that are part of the Silent generation (1928-1945). Never understood that classification, as the ones I've known were never afraid to tell you their opinion.

I was one of those choir girls, back in high school. We did similar performances, with all kinds of music. We entered from the lobby carrying those electric candles one time, all of us streaming down the aisles. I was always surprised by how many people showed up.

They were fun. Good memories!

Today's NYTimes has an excellent illustrated article about Art Kane's iconic photo, 'Harlem 1958' which captured the image of so many jazz superstars outside a building in Harlem. Here's the link . . . It is still thrilling to see almost every tenor sax luminary from Coleman Hawkins to Sonny Rollins! Rollins is the only one still alive, and his comments show amazing humility from a giant of jazz.

Wanted to post that but recalled the ire raised by the NYT paywall. Think it was Marian McPartland who joked that some musicians were unaware there two "10 o'clocks" each day.
The film is worth a look. Love Count Basie sitting with the kids on the curb. So much talent in one place at one time.

Last night I lost a few hundred pictures. Actually, I'm not sure exactly how many. Also, I lost a few short videos. I was prepping to burn a DVD with pictures from my Nikon 1 S2, going back to January of this year. It is not my "primary" camera, but I build up personal interest pictures in it. I have posted a few "here" in reduced form, but I kept "full size" with the intention of making prints. I was ARC'ing them to burn them to a DVD, but there wasn't much room on the card so I was building the ARC slowly adding files one or two at a time (deleting the individual files) and Windows ARC crashed and the archive is completely lost. Well, now I have some space on the card, but hours of work and some nice pictures are gone. Really, the program should have been written safer. It could have checked for space on the target media before doing something dangerous.

The "should have been" part is that everything you lost (and everything else) should have been backed up elsewhere before you started messing with it. I guess youve now learned that the not so easy way :-(

Congratulations! Looking forward to retirement one day myself. I have a meeting set up in a couple of weeks with a Fiduciary to go over what I need to do to make sure I'm set up correctly.

Thanks, hosers. Many challenges to come with the new old house, potential administrative membership at the VFD, hobbies, and exploring. At least I decide things like "Today I'm going fishing" or "I think I'll drive up to New Brunswick" and have the time to do it.

My challenge is that I don't want to stay in North Texas due to the overcrowding and ever increasing costs. But its hard to find a place where there is no State Income Tax, low cost of living, and quality health care. DW wants to stay near the kids, which is mystifying, because her parents don't do that and my parents didn't do that. I'm trying to interest her in at least maybe Durant Oklahoma, there's a University hospital there, and its only a couple of hours from the Dallas area.
