What's new

The Coffee House

You just be looking forward to having everyone at once! What fun and a great chance for a family portrait.
I took family portraits of the oldest daughter. My window of everyone at once may not happen. It depends on when the youngest gets into town. and how crabby the kids will be. I will take their photos the next day, but the oldest daughter has to work. I'll have a chance to get the kids.

The older teens like cash or gift cards. My daughter sends me Amazon wish lists for the younger grands so I can pick something out.
Thank you, but it's more of a learned skill. The drawingf and painting is somewhat talent (could do it since I was a little kid).

Hi all, made the mistake of going to the local shops for a loaf of bread.
saw all those “must haves” spent way tooooo much . It’s manic out there trolly roaming, basket swinging shop rage. The plaintive cry of. MUM I need a weee........ now
and if that was not bad enough out in the car park a car transporter was parked....... not sure but I think it was the over flow car park

Love this.

We will be spending Christmas with MLSIL, but lazy_lobster is flyng down here next week, then we are heading to Tulsa to be with oldest (hmmm - call him "Boomer") and his bride. We'll head back NYE, but we'll spend a few days with them and his in-laws.

Im planning on turning the pen and pencil set for MLSIL tonight and (probably) finish up the paper towel holder.

Relax, up here in the People's Republic of Ontario, you can just mug a Christmas turkey. Say no to Butterball, say yes to fresh!

I need advice about Cultural Significance of Winter Solstice

I made a time-lapse of the morning of Winter Solstice (Dec 22) and it was, in my opinion a waste. The sky was completely clouded. As far as I'm concerned I might as well just delete it. If someone feels it has significance to themselves, then I'll post it and you can download a copy (via YouTube). But aside from being an astronomical curiosity (shortest day of the year), it has not significance to me. Anybody want this?

It was significant in to the ancient Romans the feast of Saturnalia being held at that time. It is believed by some that Saturnalia is the influence of many later mid-winter traditions, possibly even the date for Christmas.

I say post it and see what reaction you get. Someone may like it; we tend to be our own hardest critics.

We went to the grocery store early yesterday morning thinking we'd beat the crowds. Apparently so did every other shopper!

Looks like we get a break from the extreme low temps for a few days. Weatherman says to expect more normal temps for the next few days, but by Thursday it's back in the freezer for us.

We've turned rainy and overcast up here, after a string of really lovely sunny days. Very little snow so far, which isn't unusual- we used to call them "green Christmases" when I was growing up.

Don't think the Roman ritual calendar had much effect on N. Europe and the Jul traditions...

It also had major significance for the Norse, who called it Yule, Yule being one of the names of Odin. The Winter Solstice also had significance for the Celtic and Germanic religions. Many of the symbols and traditions of Christmas have their origin in the pagan religions of Europe. Rome was like, if we can't erase their religion with ours, we'll just assimilate their traditions instead.

The winter solstice is a very big deal to all the prehistoric people. The solstice engendered the end of the world, but the next day was longer and the sun would return.
