..and as he looked out of the window dreaming of the big escape, a squally wind picked up the dust and scattered it ever higher into the air. The dust was always there, filling nook and crannie, no matter how carefully protected. It was hot, just too damned hot, but the ability to care had long since dried up. Along the sidewalk drifted a woman in black, rucksac on her back and baby pink sunvisor over her eyes. The hot air caught at the hem of her abaya, flicking it up to reveal her bare legs up to a pair of cut-off denim shorts. As she wandered out of view and into the shade, a white Toyota 4x4 turned into the road, sunlight glinting hard and stark from its windscreen and roof. Summer in the desert state had arrived...
