I see where you were going with the highlights and trying to make a point...however I'll agree about the murky shadows part. can't help but wonder if detailed sharp shadows would have made the same effect...might have been able to tone down the highlights even and get the same effect. *shrugs*

It does for me. ;-)

To me, that's the most important thing I can always adjust the exposure a little in PS, but composition is what it is.

I like the idea of making certain things on him stand out with the whites, even the shirt, and the path as well. I believe it can be done with editing vs. having seemingly blown out areas. I dunno if you have read this, but I was linked this a while ago and I love the information on it. Changed a lot about how I think and edit B&W. I use much of this in my photos. Obviously still learning, so it's a great reference tool for me. I even blurred my screen and stood back from monitor as he suggested, lol. Saw things I normally wouldn't have.

The reason I mentioned the blurring is because I crossed my eyes so it blurred and all I saw was the edge of his shirt and that path on left edge. Not quite the same as blurring and standing back, but same principle. Didn't melt together or follow suggested idea of the photo...just popped out as bright spots.

In principle I like it very much, except for a detail: the Canon strap and the backpack are unuseful details. With such a title, for me a simple, clear person would be better, from both the meaning and also the composition point of view - just a sort of vertical line placed there.

EDIT: maybe a backpack could function, if thinking at a long trip, but... mmm.

It does for me. ;-)

There is a misconception that you cannot have shadow/hilight detail and contrast at the same time. You don't need to completely clip shadows in order to convey darkness. In this particular image, I find the upper left side and hairline distracting.

Okay, so how's this? I lightened the murky shadows, and burned the burned highlights in the shirt. Also burned some of the hair as well as the rocks alongside the road.
