The House On The Corner

Another oddity in an otherwise conventional neighborhood. The house on the corner stands out from all the others. One day I'd like to knock and see if they'll let me peek inside!

Suggestion in Photoshop:

1. Duplicate the layer in the Layers palette.
2. Set blending mode for dupe layer to Soft Light and lower layer opacity to zero.
3. Select background layer.
4. From the Select menu -> Color Range -> from Select: drop box select Highlights.
5. Invert the selection.
6. Back in Layers palette with the Background layer selected add a Levels adjustment layer -- mask will conform to selection.
you're looking for this:

Top layer is the dupe with Soft Light blend and zero opacity.
Middle layer is Levels with mask conforming to Highlight selection.

Using the Levels adjustment layer pull the mid-point slider (gamma) to the left and the photo will lighten and lose contrast.
Using the opacity adjustment for the dupe layer increase opacity to replace lost contrast.
If necessary click on the mask for the Levels layer and edit the mask edge (may not be needed).

This will hold the highlights in place and allow you to add a little more light to the mid-tones and shadows while retaining contrast. I think it'll help.

@Ysarex conversion was done in Silver Efex, with a film simulation. I suspect that between Flickr and the TPF site there's some detail missing, because on my monitor it's a different image.

Suggestion in Photoshop:

Tried this just now, and while I did see some brightening in the midtones of the house, it caused the sky to go a funky gray. I could mask the sky but the gain just didn't seem worth the effort. Interesting approach though.

The architecture, size,and cost primarily. It's located in a low end residential neighborhood comprised mainly of "shotgun" houses. The neighborhood hasn't changed or gone down since the house was built, so whoever constructed it knew beforehand. There is a nicer area about 3 blocks away with similar size homes that were constructed about the same time. I have to wonder if the original owners, miscalculated, thinking that the good area would expand to include them?
