I've decided that some softness is inevitable with family. C'est la vie.

An unfiltered window, 1/200s, 1000ish ISO, and F2.8ish on my Sigma (non-art) 50 1.4.

Have a couple of future heart breakers there. I'm curious as to your statement. With such a wide open F/stop was that not your intention? Catching eyes in focus with such a shallow DOF requires precision that's extremely difficult with little ones.

Indeed. It wasn’t a planned shoot, so no additional lighting, and I didn’t want to push the ISO. I easily could have...but you know how these types of things go. I had about 3 minutes to get anything out of the situation, haha. I know better though. I should have bumped Fstop and ISO a stop in opposite directions.

Yup anyone that thinks kids can't move at hypersonic speeds has never tried to photograph them. I've found with small ones that a combination of DOF, shutter set to continuous or burst, and zone focus works really well.

...but if you take the time to think AND change the settings the moment is GONE!
