"The Notorious 5" c&c please

Hi all,

These are pictures of a group of friends who go to school in all different places, but come home every summer and spend every waking moment together. They wanted some fun photos that they can take back to school with them. They call themselves the Notorious 5, don't know why! Let me know what you think of the pictures. I did add some "actions" to some of the photos, as I'm still trying to find my style. I understand a lot of people don't like them, but please bear with me. If you have an edit you think looks better, please share. Your input on the lighting and composition is greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

I think these are cute pictures. The concept is something that I wouldnt have thought of, friends doing a photoshoot. I dont have a lot of experience, so I would have had a hard time coming up with appropriate compositions for a group of girlfriends. I think you did a good job! I really like the first three!

The idea is excellent; from that point the series works very well. Technically, I see a few issues however. 2,4, and 5 are significantly over-exposed, and the drab, featureless sky really works against the image (I understand you can't control the sky, but I think some compositional changes would have reduced the amount of it that was visible). As well, they all have rather more DoF than is ideal; try using longer glass and a larger aperture to allow you to more fully isolate the subjects from the background.

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

Fun idea. I like photo 3 because it is such a natural shot, doesn't look posed and looks sharp on my screen :thumbup:

Ok, I was trying to get a more shallow DoF, using my 28mm-70mm at the max. I am renting the 70mm-200mm f/2.8 for a wedding next weekend, I take that will do the job?

But thanks for the input. The sky was blue the whole day up until this shoot and then it started to sprinkle. I was kind of bummed about that.

I kind of like the last apart from the fact that you cut off their hands by their wrists on almost everyone, leaving so much headroom at the same time.
But I prefer the photos where you can actually recognise each and everyone of them to those where they are so far away, I must say. The third is particularly nice, what with them being so natural and happy! But is the bench leaning or is it the photo?

Covering the same territory here:
- Number 3 is also my fav for the variety of expression as you move down the bench
- each shot seems to use foliage only, but then there are random bits of park play things in the bench shots. As Tirediron indicated, a shallower DOF would help this
- a back light would give you more separation where the women with darker hair are blending into the shadows of the foliage.

Overexposure :/ Photos themselves are great though! If you are having trouble with your camera and getting the exposure just right, have you ever considered adjusting the brightness and contrast through a photo editor? I find it a great help when I have to shoot on sunny days and find my camera and I to not be in agreement

very funny the fourth shot! But, in my opinion the time fo shot was too long.
