You ever tried a pair of sunglasses and they make things look brighter?

Is it theoretically possible in a similar way to invent a lens filter that effectively makes a camera lens ''faster''?

Sunglasses that makes things brighter? They look better to your eyes because (if good) they stop UV from entering your eyes, but they don't make you see better in dark.

Yes. it's called a flashlight ;)
There should be a way of pushing more light into the lens but i think that in the futrure it will all be about the sensor.

Nikon just showed their new Nikon coolpix S8100 with backlit sensor. may this be a step in the right direction?

Some tints do make things appear brighter because those colors are easier for our eyes to see. Amber & green are two that come to mind.

I don't think the same would work for a camera...

That would only result in a loss of contrast.

In photography, you are recording the light being reflected off of objects. Nothing you add to the lens will increase that.

Thanks guys. Good answers.
