There is an Idiot on this forum. Guess who.

Go out and buy the full version of Photoshop CS5, then you will be able to read the PDF. :banghead:

Perfect opportunity to buy a new camera ! Sorry to hear that sucks though.

Manual? I don't need no stinkin' manual! ;)

Wait till the OP finds out how much it's going to cost for the repair. The camera needs to be almost entirely disassembled to replace the shutter.

Last I heard, Nikon USA gets about $325 to replace a shutter (level C repair), but they clean, lubricate, inspect, and re-calibrate the camera too.

Of course, it wouldn't be a warranty repair so any shop having access to the right parts could replace the shutter. Nikon lists several authorized shops on their web site.

Just buy a used D40x for $299 to $329 from KEH...and live with a lesson learned.

:(It's ME!:(

I had a speck on my sensor. The blower could not get it. I thought I would put on a long exposure and knock it with a Q Tip. WROOOOONG! I was too slow and the shutter closed down. Now the camera is broken and I have to get it proffesionaly repaired. Apparently there are some delicate parts on the shutter for speed and precision that break very easily. Also it puts the camera out of sync and the mirror stays up. Woe is me.

Whew, thought you were going to say me.
At least you didnt disassemble the sensor like someone else and expect the forum to help you put it back together like humpty, dumpty. Good Luck

Dropped off the camera today. $60 for the part and $80 for labor. Also includes cleaning. The shop has top notch ratings that is why I chose them.

As for the manual. I have had the camera for several years now and the manual has been lost for some time. Also I am finding that just because someone makes money with pictures does not mean they know much about cameras. I was informed what to do because it would cost a small fortune to have it done by a professional. Truth is the service is $80 and he inspects the cameras functions. Atleast when I get a better camera I know to use it wisely and when I need help take it to a professional.

On a personal note I have also been frustrated that I don't have anyone here to help me with photography. A friend of mine makes about $50,000 a year salary contract for doing pictures and I am finding he has been misleading me for a long time about buying equipment. His advice has more discouraged me and confused me. This forum has been more helpful in a day than he has ever been. Now that I know a little more about photography I see he has many flaws in his photography. He told me he had all these girls that wanted him to take boudoir photos and nudes and he was going to make all this money doing it because it was such a big buisiness and so many trust him. So far all I have seen is pictures of young teens in sexualy explicit poses that he defends as just girls messing around and they just happen to be dressed a certain way. What ever dude.
Anyway visiting the shop in Tampa today and the camera repair guy I have learned there are people out there to talk to and learn from. This forum is pretty good I think.

Well, glad to hear that they can fix it for a reasonable price.
But yeah...that is the best way to learn - take it from another idiot (myself) who thought that by unscrewing a few parts he could actually remove the sensor - shortly after it was raining screws, parts and what not, and upon walking into the camera shop with a bag of parts and asking very nicely if they know which part goes where felt quite stupid bout it. Haven't done that ever since ;)

And yes, this forum is absolutely the best place if you want some input, honest critique and hard hitting advice on photography.

Boudoir photography is quite a big market (depending where you are) and if you are a photographer that has a flawless reputation in this genre, then surely you will make a lot of money (most of my income is boudoir - but mainly seniors / couple boudoir shots). Young teens in explicit poses...hmmm, sound more like soft porn to me...but yeah.

Did you know?

You can download the users manual for free at NikonUSA.com. That's what several people did to respond to your thread with the page number.

"Excuses are like assholes, everybody has one." :lmao:
