It is an American snack "cake"....basically, a spongy, yellow-ish, very sugary, soft, fluffly "cake" piece, shaped in a somewhat hotdog-bun-like shape, rounded on the top, but flat on the bottom, with a center core that has been injection-filled with a light, sweet, fluffy filling similar to whipped cream and sugar...it comes wrapped in a see-thru cellophane wrapper, and keeps well when not refrigerated, under basically, I swear, any temperature from 10- below freezing to 109 degrees Farenheit, based on my own, personal experience...
Twinkies from the Margaret Thatcher era (meaning, quite possibly from before your birth year, Overread!) would PROBABLY be edible, I would venture to say. And no, I am NOT kidding.
The Twinkie is a mixture of American folklore, American industrial foodstuff technology, injection filling, mass-marketing, and garbage food marketing. To a four-, to nine year-old boy, the Twinkie represents the absolute pinnacle of American snack cake technology, creativity, and deliciousness. For those older than nine, the Twinkie represents decadence, artificiality, guilty pleasure, and shame. All in about equal measure.
The Twinkie is the Kim Kardashian of the American snack food scene...everybody wants her, or wants to be like her, but NOBODY will actually admit that...
