DOF really isn't a concern when there's nothing behind the subject. 6.3 on a 50 1.4 or 1.8 is around the sweet spot for them.

Sorry, but DOF is pretty big when it comes to headshots or portraits, even if there is nothing behind the subject.

Right.. so why try to have a shallow one?
Look at the reference you're quoting me.

The person was asking why not open up the aperture?
Stop down for deep depth of field, as well as sharpness... It doesn't matter because the background is blown out anyway.
Does that make sense?
 
So do you have a tutorial on this whole thinking for yourself thing? I mean it's so much easier to think for yourself when someone else tells you what to think.. you know, for yourself..
