I'm with the who cares crowd...

But I did feel your pain last 4th of july.

Here in Charleston they shoot of the big fireworks from the U.S.S Yorktown. So naturally, I have my camera and tripod all setup and ready for some long exposures across the harbor at the Sumter Memorial.

Their were a couple of young kids with their nikon Dsomething or others in fully auto, popup's just popping up left and right.

Every damned time I moved to a different location to get away from them, they'd migrate my way.

It's really freakin' annoying when your shutters sitting there open waiting for the next fireworks so you can close the shutter when some douche's flash start going off.

Last time I shot fireworks I was luckey and did not have any trouble with that, the only person anywhere near me with a camera I cought befor it started. I filled his head with all sorts of useful information. He then turned off the flash on his Z-Series Easy share and procceded to get better shots than I did

he only has a Canon XT and a kit lens, he shouldnt even be here
Well, I wouldn't dare say "your camera doesn't matter" ;)

But, it matters a lot less than the thing right behind it.

I feel sorry for people who consider the noise at 1600 (for a D40, not a D3) to be acceptable - its pretty damn obvious in the photo, and whereas grain added character - noise is a load of.
It's acceptable when you resize it to 800x600 for web use. Heck, it's better-than-acceptable for an 8x10 print. Additionally, Nikon's noise tends to look more like grain anyway.

Give me a technical limitation and I'll make something artistic from it.

I guess I'm in the minority. It makes me wince with pain when I see other people doing things so incorrectly that I could do so much better.
Well, for one, I know I wouldn't be using popup flash

How do you know that?

I was at a car show today. Brought my camera stuff, of course.

I couldn't help but be so bothered by the people who show up with a D700 and f/2.8 zoom, then piss away the thousands of dollars spent on camera equipment capable of utmost technical quality by using the popup flash :banghead:

I had my D40 along, using my 18-55, 55-200 and 35/1.8 handheld up to ISO 1600 with no flash and I got by just fine.

I wish people would learn how to use their cameras rather than spray-and-pray in auto mode.

Just had to get that off my chest.

EDIT: w00t for post #1000 :D

The popup flash allows for the ISO to drop. I'm still new at this but lowering the ISO to reduce noise I thought was a good thing?

Noise, shmoise. Noise is a technical issue you can work around and use to an artistic advantage. 99% of the time, popup flash makes for harsh, crappy lighting and crappy lighting will always be crappy lighting.

I didn't know that, thanks...

Sorry, I thought I answered you, but I think the forum software screwed up. The answer is the same answer I just gave gravity0.

No problem. What works best is if you can find a surface to bounce an external flash head off of (a white ceiling works best for natural-looking lighting). Short of that, try a diffuser/softbox or ringlight if you want that sort of effect.

Whereeeeeeeees Jerrrrrrrrrrrrry
:hugs:

Remember how I said I kinda not participate in threads that are repeated over and over and over?

I'm over here doing things that are a lot more interesting.
But don't think I am not around. ;)

On a D700, you do not even see grain till above ISO 1600. ISO 3200 is good and with a little cleaning you cannot even tell there is noise at ISO 6400.

In other words, at a car show, with a D700, a flash is NOT needed and in fact makes the pictures look like ass (as does any on camera flash BTW, so I am not picking on the D700... lol). :)

Heh... true enough, good point

Still, something about people with more money than brains really bothers me.
Try building houses for those people. That will really get you going.
I had one woman who wanted us to move a wall around like it was furniture for a certain piece of furniture. It was a wall I had already plumbed and, put the electrical in too. She changed her mind three times about what piece of furniture was going to go on that wal. By the time we were done the wall ended up where it had started. The owner balked when I hit him with the change charges because, the wall ended up in the same place.
