I was reviewing some photographs recently and considering the passage of time illustrated by them, thus the title of this thread, TIME STANDS NOT STILL.
At approximately six weeks old, our Labrador Retriever puppy MAC was around little ball of fur with some mighty big paws and a very bold attitude to match. It was quite apparent early on that MAC was special and possessed many of the traits I seek in a gun dog trainee prospect.
Fast forward, this is MAC not quite at the ten month mark and at work as a gun dog trainee during his rookie year afield. Many, many days spent solidifying MAC'S foundational obedience training, that being a critical element in the making of a truly outstanding companion and gun dog. Additionally, MAC has been trained intensively by yours truly regarding early socialization, introduction to game birds, water, decoys, calls, recreational vehicles, boats, and firearms. Retrieving skills imparted has included steadiness conditioning, the visual marking of birds in flight, scent tracking of birds on the ground, and the retrieving of downed birds on both the land and water.
To state that MAC'S first season of working upland birds has been anything less than stellar would be untruthful. MAC has been a total joy to work with and I visualize gun dog greatness for him after much of the additional work that remains to be accomplished is attained.
A continuing work in progress, MAC and I will maintain the course of field work that will translate into the complex skill sets needed to perform at increasingly difficult levels as both a competent gun dog and hunt test K9 athlete. My plans for MAC are to start running him in both HRC and AKC licensed hunt tests in the spring of 2019 and will campaign him throughout that season toward titles under those organizations.
I will continue chronicling MAC'S progress going forward.
