Photos NOT OK to edit
I'm a newbie to the DSLR world, but have been shooting as much as I can. I plan on doing some practice shots on my toddler niece (22 months old) in a few weeks, and would LOVE some tips from those who typically photograph kids. Please, helpful advice only. I would love to really know how to get the best color out of her eyes (she has sky blue eyes). Another other helpful tips appreciated. I owe a Nikon D3100, and I have the 55-200 zoom lens, as well as the Nikon - AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 Lens for Nikon.

Thanks in advance!

After a nap. Put the camera on a tripod and set it to a particular depth of field (with auto-focus off) so that you can be playing with her in that spot and still have her in good focus then use a remote trigger. Use a bounce flash/ shoot through umbrella to help with motion and shoot RAW and do the rest in PP.

If you are shooting a protrait, I agree with Mike_E. If you are shooting the toddler "in the wild", set shutter speed priority above 1/100 and bring your running shoes.

Also, you have to use a toy or something that will keep the toddlers attention when you need him/her to look up.

Haha, I so agree with this. They don't like to be tamed . Balloons, or bubble always seem to keep their attention.

Light, and a lot of it.

My one tip for toddler photography.... don't be in a hurry. Posing them is like herding cats. Good luck.

Thanks for all the great information :) I'll let you know how it goes - and maybe share some pictures, if they turn out the way I want them to.

Agree with everyone. Great tips! Honestly you should really share even if you think they turn out bad. You will never grow or get any better if you don't learn from your mistakes, or even know what mistakes you are possibly making...
