The color, and texture really, are similar to the horse. Maybe that's what makes it "okay". I imagine a solid black fence would clash.

And like john said, I like that it "ends" the image.

#4 is a great shot and the thing about the fence rail ( at least for me) is my eye is drawn to it, but then I'm immediately drawn to the eye of the horse and there's something in the way the eye was captured make me wonder what's going on in that head.

I also like #5 a lot as well, the two could tell a story

Yep, #4 is the winner of the lot. I would actually like to see a little more of the fence so you know why the view is the way it is.
