Too many lenses

The 20-35 f/2.8 would be a nice compliment to my 35-70mm & 70-200mm...hmmmmm. Look what you did Astro!

Right now I own the 18-55mm vr, 55-200mm vr, the 50mm 1.8g, and the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8. I'm looking to add a few more primes to the list for the optical quality while I save for The Trinity and a fx camera. I think I will end up withe a body first then the lenses.

I'm thinking about getting getting some Sigma art lenses. Their 35mm 1.4 & 50mm 1.4 look pretty incredible.

I have my eye on the 35mm Sigma Art. I hear it's amazing and sadly I've see the 35mm 1.8 nikon in action. The Nikon 1.8 for fx is gross and severely out performed by even it's little bro made for DX. Then the 1.4g Nikon is priced crazily compared to the Sigma, and all this while the Sigma performs beautifully.

At half the price of the nikon equivalent, the 35mm art sure is an attractive lens to do the 24mp sensor justice. But for a crop sensor the 18-35mm is probably a much better choice.

I have noticed the need for some sharp lenses due the the hig resolution of my Nikon's. So far the 50 has been great and the Tokina as well. The two kit lenses are pretty good but I work quite a bit in lower light and also like running wide or close to wide open form some emphasis on isolation. The kit lenses fall short there. I have some great photosmwith them but they can be limiting.

Is the 18-35 you mentioned the Sigma? I noticed it on their site the other day and was intrigued by it.

The 18-35 is as sharp as the 35mm art. But the 18-35 is meant to be used on crop sensors, that is really the only big drawback.

The 20-35 f2.8 is really nice. I scored a deal with keh.com. BGN grade, so I could afford it. Couldn't be happier.

As the title states, I think I may have too many lenses. In fact I know I do. Let this be a warning to anyone just starting. It's easy to get GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) when you're in the beginning stages of your photography journey. I started with a D80 back in 06. It came with the 28-80mm f3.3-5.6G & an SB800. It was my fathers camera but of course I'd play with it as much as I could. My next lens was the 18-55mm VR. Looking back, I should have just started building my collection with FX lenses. Afterwards I purchased a 50mm 1.8D & a 70-300mm 4.5-5.6G ED VR. I was doing well as this 3 lens combo covered the whole range for me. The only problem was, once I had seen how sharp the 50mm prime & the beautiful bokeh I could get get out of such a large aperture, I was hooked. I sold the 18-55mm, got a 35mm f/2 & a 18-70mm. The gap between 55mm & 70mm always bugged me for some reason.

Anywho, my point is this: I went through a lot of selling and reselling lenses when I should've had a plan instead. Buying lenses should depend on the type of photography you want to pursue. In terms of money spent, I always bought used so I would always break even or make a little more. Not bad.

My current cameras/lenses and why I use them are:

D80
D7000
D600
FM2

20mm f/4 AI - Landscapes
24mm f/2.8 AI - wide angle/groups
35mm f/2D - street photography on FM2
50mm f/1.4D - portraits
60mm f/2.8 - Macro work
85mm f/1.8g - LOVE for portraits
35-70mm f/2.8D - events
70-200mm f/2.8 VR1 - events/portraits

28-80mm 3.3-5.6G - nostalgic reasons
18-70mm 3.3 -5.6G - keep it on the D80
24-85mm VR 3.5-4.5G VR - came with the D600, just haven't gotten around to selling it.

The 24mm - 35-70mm - 70-200mm is my "Semi-Holy Trinity". New people, don't succumb to GAS! Veterans, how many lenses do you guys have?

Ummm, I'd have to go look.

I may have to go dig out that 18-70mm though, great little lens.

Full disclosure though: I've recently taken to just picking one lens to take out and leaving the grip behind as well. so the load is much lighter these days.

If I can't get the shot with whatever I have at the time I just keep walking. Another kind of self imposed discipline I suppose but it does cause me to concentrate on looking for whatever will be best for the lens I'm using that day.

Yeah, had it 20-35 but I wanted wider. I ended up with a 18-35/3.5-4.5 AF-D lens and I couldn't be happier. Less than half the price and alot lighter.

I also have the 35-70/2.8 but I don't use it much. I want to upgrade that to the 28-70/2.8 but in the mean time I also have the 24-85/2.8-4 which is a really sharp lens according to the DxO stuff. so that covers me well up to the 80-200/2.8 and my recent 70-300vrii

my kids soccer went to a much bigger field .. so now I'll be using a 70-300 instead of my 80-200. With the ISO abilities of the d600 (or d7000) I have no worries anymore.

I used to have some f/2.8 primes, but the f/2.8 zooms actually had as good picture quality so I got rid of them like the 24/2.8.
The nice small size of the older primes is very nice for bag space compared to the gigantic ones of today. But I figured, why have 3 (24-50-85) when I could just have one lens (24-85/2.8-4). Of course, I still have the 50 and 85 lol

Too many lenses ......... BWAHHHHAHHHHAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

In my gigantic camera bag (all nikon, except for the sigma):

14-24mm 2.8
20mm 1.8
24-85VR
80-200 2.8
180mm 3.5 Sigma macro
200-400 F4 VR I

I have decided that the 200-400 is too cumbersome so I am selling it and going with the Tamron 150-600. If I were to list all the lenses I have owned in the last 4 years that list would be 4 times as long.

JTP, that doesn't sound like too many lenses. There's very little unnecessary overlap, and in fact there's room for a little more! Hahaha (not joking). A nice bag nevertheless, very nice.
