Tool or Toy? The Apple iPad 2 for Photographers

I think the question should be reworded since the iPad has plenty of commercial use in many different fields. It's especially become big in medical environments. So its clearly a useful productivity tool and a toy for those who prefer. But how good of a tool is it for photography? On the photojournalism front, the iPad is too light. Photojournalists need more horsepower for basic processing and selecting of photos and upload from the field. The MacBook Air is more suitable since you can type stories as well.

Observation Wrong... Every response of mine in this thread was on an ipad.... :-/

i did mention that I use one very frequently... web consumption, e reader, even as a secondary monitor

It wasn't directed at you, really. This has been rehashed several times now.
You find your's usefull. Do you regret buying it? Are you dissappointed with what it can't do, that you didn't know before purchasing?

Coasted from my iChad.

oh then i stand corrected... i apologize

useful, yes
regret no
dissapointed of their claim to support raw... but its no big deal

The Ipad was purchased purely as a device for web content consumption... no more. Some thing to relax with on the couch to read the news, forums, and books. For that the ipad is fine. I guess that makes it a toy since I use it mainly for leisure. Hackintosh netbook for portable and full desktops for the rest

VI your reachin.. keep going have fun

by that line of thought underwear is also a photographic tool

So you don't have an explanation of your definition of what a "photographers tool" is? Is it just what ever you deem should be a tool? If that's the case, the the iPad is used by a lot of photographers and more than enough of them would definitely call it a photographer's tool. A tool used by photographers. It may or may not be considered an image creation tool by some people, but that's because those people don't use it as such.

I'm not reaching at all. Is a hammer not an electricians tool?

I've allowed the whole iPad phenomenon pass over my head. I can't work out what the thing is actually for, it's not a laptop because you can't run your own software on it, it has no slots for memory cards or other peripherals and yet it's too big to put in your pocket. I think the iPhone is a much more important step in the world of personal media than the iPad. And as other's have said, until Apple and Adobe sort out their differences and give us Flash, it's online uses are somewhat limited.
Hahahahahaha...I love the nay sayers.

Online uses somewhat limited? The most I am limited is viewing amatuer photographer websites who insist on using flash because it sooooo coool, and not offer an alternative mobile site.
I have yet to be limited for things in which I need to use the web for. I can't think of even one instance where I have been upset that I can't do something because of the lack of flash. Typically when I run across that roadblock, it's nothing that matters to me anyhow.

The iPad serves my personal and business needs very well.

Posted from my iPad.

If you use an app that lets you remote desktop into a PC, you can just watch flash that way.

I guess there are solutions to every problem.

Cool to know, but like I said, for my needs, I have never needed to view/use a flash site.

As an IT person, I believe in that statement whole heartedly. Especially when there's always the solution of pawning the problem off onto someone else.
