Just wondering what the communities general consensus would be for shooting 3/4 and 1/2 body shots for portraits. Currently shooting with a Canon 50D. I just need another lens to spend money on and get familiar with.

Probably a 50. Either the 1.4 or the 1.2 depending on the budget. On a crop cam it comes out around 80 (i think?). On FF it seems that the 85 1.2 is pretty popular for portraits. A 35 might start to get a little wide. Either that or a zoom... 24-70?

I have yet to try my 50mm on a proper shoot but I will be getting there soon as bookings for 2012 mount. Being my first time around a prime lens I'm just getting used to adjusting the size of my subject by physically moving myself.

50mm 1.4 (haven't tried the 50 1.2 and am not interested in it at that price) would be my recommendation as well. Very sharp lens and very affordable.
