"Topography"

I'm assuming you don't just want to stab your viewers in the eye repeatedly, because that's a lot easier.

I'm pretty OK with that, actually, and using photography to do it is a lot less messy.

All I'm saying about abstraction is that people are more pissed off by abstract photos than abstract paintings. This isn't good or bad, I'm just saying your starting off with a slightly irritated viewer. That sounds like it might appeal to you ;)

I think I'm just wired differently. A lot of things that most people cannot stand, I find very aesthetically pleasing, while what a lot of people like, I find unattractive. I do find myself at odds a lot with people's taste, and it can be really frustrating for me - because I seriously just can't make a good photograph by other's standards. I mean, occasionally what I do will cross over, but typically I just feel out in the weeds and what I consider my best work most people dislike or are even offended by.

Good edit. I often find that darker is better in photos, and so it is here. I was thinking of something with the upper left being darker and more contrasty, but I like the more even approach you've taken.

Most people can't handle abstracts, so they just scratch their heads and walk away. I've not encountered much actual hostility, but perhaps that means my abstracts usually aren't good enough.

It occurs to me that you might do better with portfolios than individual pictures. What we find baffling in one picture, might make sense in context, where we can perhaps get our minds around your visual vocabulary. Whatever that means, I think it means something, though.

If you out together a little portfolio, I'd look at it. PM me, if you do. I respect what you're trying to do.

I thought it was a pint of real ale

as opposed to intellectual ale?
